HR Support for International Businesses with Australian Employees

You’ve hired great people in Australia. You don’t need to hire an HR department to manage them compliantly.

HR Support for International Employers

If your company is based overseas and employs staff in Australia – whether through your own entity or an Employer of Record – you’re still responsible for how those people are managed.

Fair Work obligations, workplace safety duties, performance issues, and workplace complaints don’t pause because your head office is in another timezone.

Miranda McMahon HR Consultants (MMHR) gives international businesses:

  • A trusted, on-the-ground HR partner in Australia – without the cost or complexity of a full-time local HR hire.

  • Local, Accessible HR and Leadership Expertise

  • Ability to work across multiple timezones and regions.

  • HR Support when and how you need it.

This service is available through any of our engagement options, whether hourly, retainer or one of our premium subscriptions.

The problem for international employers

Managing Australian employees from overseas creates a specific kind of exposure. Australian employment law is more centralised and prescriptive than the UK, US, or much of Asia — Modern Awards set out pay rates, overtime, allowances and classifications that vary by industry and role, the National Employment Standards (NES) under the Fair Work Act 2009 apply regardless of where your head office sits, and the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (and state equivalents) imposes duties on the business even when management is remote.

Get it wrong — an underpayment, a mishandled performance issue, a workplace complaint dealt with informally — and the exposure isn’t just financial. It’s reputational, and it can surface publicly through the Fair Work Commission. Most international employers don’t have this expertise in-house, and hiring a dedicated Australian HR manager for a handful of employees rarely stacks up commercially.

What MMHR does

MMHR acts as your Australian HR partner — the local expertise your business needs, scaled to the size of your Australian workforce. This typically includes:

  • Compliance foundations: employment contracts, position descriptions, and workplace policies reviewed and built to align with the NES, applicable Modern Awards, and WHS obligations.

  • Day-to-day people management support: a point of contact for managers when performance, conduct, or workplace relationship issues arise — before they escalate.

  • Investigations and mediation: independent, procedurally fair handling of workplace complaints and conduct issues, run by qualified investigators — protecting both the employee’s right to natural justice and the business’s legal position.

  • WHS and psychosocial risk: audits and frameworks that meet Australian work health and safety duties, including the growing regulatory focus on psychosocial risk.

  • Executive coaching and manager capability: building the on-the-ground leadership capability that international head offices often can’t provide remotely.

MMHR does not replace your payroll provider, tax agent, or Employer of Record if you use one — it works alongside them, filling the HR and people-management gap those services don’t cover.

How it works

  • Free 30-minute consultation — we learn about your Australian workforce, current arrangements, and where the gaps are.

  • Tailored scope — fixed-fee project work (e.g. a contract or policy review) or ongoing retained support, depending on what you need.

  • On-the-ground partner — from there, MMHR is your Australian HR contact: proactive, responsive, and versed in local law.

How quickly can MMHR help if we have an urgent workplace issue?2026-07-28T11:49:15+10:00

Contact us directly for urgent matters — response times depend on current capacity, but workplace complaints and conduct issues are treated as priority given the natural justice and compliance timeframes involved.

What’s the minimum size business you work with?2026-07-28T11:48:07+10:00

There’s no minimum — MMHR scales support from a single Australian employee to larger teams, with either fixed-fee project work or ongoing retained support.

Is MMHR an Employer of Record (EOR)?2026-07-28T11:47:21+10:00

No. MMHR doesn’t become the legal employer of your Australian staff, and doesn’t process payroll or manage visa/immigration matters. MMHR provides HR compliance advisory, policy and contract support, investigations, and people-management expertise. We work alongside your EOR or payroll provider, not in place of them.

Do I need an Australian entity to use MMHR’s services?2026-07-28T11:47:32+10:00

No. MMHR provides HR advisory and compliance support regardless of whether you employ staff through your own Australian entity or an Employer of Record. If you don’t yet have either in place, we can refer you to trusted partners who specialise in entity setup and EOR services.
